new yorkers loooove to walk!

In true NY style for the holiday, the MTA went on strike this morning. I’m sure it won’t last long since the city loses $400 million a day not operating. God forbid they raise the metrocard fees again to make up for the loss.

One friend's employer put her in a hotel the night before, So she could get to work. And my other friend Sara, walked over the 59th Street Bridge to get to her job. She works for a retail website and can't possibly take a day off during the xmas shopping season. But in Grand Sara Style, she filled her coffee thermos with a Bloody Mary and started on her hike.

The hike only takes about an hour - I've done it twice actually - on 9/11 and also during the blackout in August of '03, the funnest of fun days (which is another story altogether).

2 years ago, another strike was threatened and I was working for my temp agency at the time. My friend Amy and I were planning to sleep at the agency office cuz we couldn't take a day off. I agree with transit workers fighting for their rights and higher pay - there are a lot of people in this country who should fight for the same thing. But I feel for New Yorkers, they are stressed out enough! And 5 days before xmas! There are some unhappy people there right now.

Lots of love to my NY friends!! Don't forget, a Bloody Mary in your Starbucks mug makes the commute a breeze!
